Machinist

Summary: To have an understanding of how thermoformed molds are made and thermoformed plastic parts are formed. Analyzes specifications. From blue prints and sketches, operates all mold shop machinery in order to fabricate thermoforming molds, tooling components, and closure and label machinery parts. Repair existing molds and hi-die cutting knives by performing the following duties.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Must be able to study blue prints, sketches, drawings, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operation for fabrication and setup requirements of work pieces and machine tools
  2. Must be able to measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining
  3. Must be capable of generating simple machine programs for 2-3 axis machining centers using machine control interface
  4. Must be able to set up and operate machine tool such as lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders to fabricate parts and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications
  5. Must be able to lift raw materials, machined parts or tooling and positions and secures items on surface plate or work table
  6. Must be able to build and repair molds from prints or verbal instructions
  7. Must be able to compute dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations
  8. Must be able to verify dimensions, alignments and clearances
  9. Must be able to use hand tools for venting and polishing of molds and sharpening hi-die knives
  10. Must be able to make jigs, fixtures and gauges to hold and check work
  11. Must have knowledge and ability to machine aluminum mold castings
  12. Must have the ability to MIG and TIG weld both mild steel and stainless
  13. Must be able to calculate and set controls to regulate machining parameters such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, and/or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control data
  14. Must be able to start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required
  15. Must be able to verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications, blueprints, etc.
  16. Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
  17. Must be able to learn and complete full GN set-ups
  18. Must fit and assemble parts into complete assembly
  19. Verifies and documents critical dimensions and alignment of thermoform tool and components assemblies per inspection procedures using calipers, micrometers, height gauges and other measuring instruments
  20. Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining, assembly, and tooling problems
  21. Must practice safe work habits and follow general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE)
  22. Must practice good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows FDA product safety standards, follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all Safe Quality Food (SQF) requirements
  23. Must ensure lockout procedures are followed any time the equipment is being cleaned or maintained
  24. Must have regular and consistent attendance
  25. All other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED);
  2. State Certified Machinist with a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years experience in machine shop with the ability to demonstrate proficiency in the setup and operation of all shop machine tools, inspection equipment and methods and tool repair procedures. Journeyman Machinist preferred.
  3. CNC experience preferred.
  4. Must be able to communicate on a one-on-one basis or in group situations, understand instructions and follow SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures).
  5. Must have the ability to work with mathematical fundamentals of shop math; geometry and trigonometry.
  6. Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instruction.
  7. Must have the ability to resolve problems and have a strong mechanical aptitude. Must have an understanding of how thermoformed (sheet) plastic is formed.
