Tooling Engineer (RD&E )

Tooling Engineer

Summary

The candidate will be responsible for complete ownership of tool engineering activities relating to new product development and some ongoing manufacturing support. The minimum tooling technical level require for this position is full knowledge of tool design, equipment & process involved with contact heat and preheat FTS machines, as well as intermediate knowledge of tool design for preheat large-bed, 3rd motion, matched-metal trim equipment. Other duties include activities focusing on the company and departmental operational excellence in respect to increasing revenue, cost reduction and improved quality.

 

Essential Function/Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Manage the design of thermoform tooling for new products concepts using company tool standards and good engineering practices
  •  Develop, maintain and continuously update tool design and fabrication standards to meet companyís objectives
  •  Manage all aspect of tooling projects, such as Planning, Budgets, Supplier Activities, and Documentation to ensure delivery of tools that meet Inline Plastics requirements 
  •  Interact closely with engineering, manufacturing and maintenance personnel to identify issues and the appropriate solutions 
  •  Design thermoform tooling per Customer (internal/external) requirements and follow the designs through the fabrication and debugging process leading to commercialization. 
  •  Develop, maintain, and ensure revision accuracy of all tool design files and PDP documentation within the companies file management system 
  •  Perform analysis on mold cooling and form air circuits using heat transfer and fluid analysis methods to ensure most efficient design. 
  •  Participate in Product Design Input / Output Review Meetings to identify potential tool design constraints
  •  Participate in DFMEA & PFMEA Meetings to identify potential tool design constraints
  •  Participate in DFMEA & PFMEA Meetings to identify potential tool design constraints
  •  Lead Tool Design Input / Output meetings with both internal customers and tool vendors
  •  Responsible for FAT - Factory Acceptance Testing of tooling prior to shipment from tool vendor
  •  Responsible for SAT - Site Acceptance Testing of tooling upon arrival from tool vendor
  •  Participate in IQ/Comm to validate tool design and performance during RD&E & Production qualification runs
  •  Work with product and tooling engineers to recommend long-term improvements to new products and tool designs 
  •  Work with internal and external tool manufacturers to drive quality, cost reduction and lead time reduction. 
  •  Work with manufacturing to establish tooling standards, process conditions and maintenance programs for current and future tooling 
  •  Act as the point of contact for tooling issues that require engineering assistance 
  •  Work with Quality to develop QA gauges for new products and existing products as needed 
  •  Ability to mentor and train other members of the team in 3rd motion, matched-metal tool design 
  •  Other duties as assigned

Required knowledge and skills

  • Skilled in 3D solid modeling software with minimum training certification's in part modeling & assemblies. SolidWorks experience with Advanced Modeling, Advanced Part Surfacing, and FEA preferred.
  • Specific knowledge of product and tool design for thermoforming is required.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing environment involving plastic processes. Thermoforming operations exposure is preferred
  • Must display confident abilities to lead both projects and project team members.
  • Must demonstrate solid time management competencies.
  • Strong demonstration of solid mathematical & budgeting proficiency.
  • Strong analytic skills for problem solving with good mechanical aptitude.
  • Good communication and leadership skills.
  • Tool making or machine shop experience is a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, flexible environment.
  1. Education and/or Experience - Bachelorís degree (BS) in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering with minimum 10 years Thermoforming experience. Alternatively the candidate must have minimum 10 years of experience with a strong background of pre-heat FTS & 3rd motion, matched-metal thermoform tool design, along with relevant engineering, machine shop, or manufacturing experience in consumer products within the thermoforming environment. Tool making or machine shop experience is preferred. 
  2. Language Skills - English speaking. The ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports. The ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors. 
  3. Mathematical Skills - Ability to comprehend and apply principles of calculus, and differential equations and statistical theory.  
  4. Reasoning Ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
