Tractor Trailer Driver- 2nd Shift

Department: Distribution Center
Location: Shelton, CT


Drives tractor-trailer to transport product to and from plant locations to the company distribution center. Driver also locates, and relocates, trailers from any location, within the facility grounds. Completes various functions of distribution activities to complete supply chain requirements of the company and its customers.

Essential Function/Duties and Responsibilities

  • Driver is responsible for timely trailer moves of product and/or materials, especially those assigned as hot or critical.
  • Driver must be aware at all times of safety of personnel and quality of product being transported.
  • Driver is to immediately report any problems with quality of product to Distribution Supervisor.
  • Driver is to perform daily inspection checklist of tractor and all trailers at start of each shift. Conducts daily tractor and trailer inspections to include, but not limited to, tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water, etc.
  • Driver is to ensure all loads are secure prior to any movement within the facility grounds, or to and from plants and distribution center.
  • Delivers inter-office correspondence to and from plant locations and the company distribution center.
  • Performs miscellaneous errands such as carrying mail to and from post office, outside pickup from vendors, and delivers to local customers.
  • Performs functions of a Distribution Operator.
  • Pulls or pick orders and examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications, checking for correctness and accuracy of count. Complies with customer requirements by ensuring error free shipments (PERFECT ORDER)
  • Operates forklift to load and unload trucks, move, convey, transport, or locate product within the facility, using electronic equipment, scanning bar coded product and locations.
  • Operates various bar code-oriented equipment to complete assigned tasks within the facility.
  • Uses computer to generate various paperwork required in the movement of finished goods and raw materials to supply both manufacturing operations and the customer.
  • Performs various computer-related functions utilizing company ERP system and Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail.
  • Using hand-held and tethered data collection devices, compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bill of      lading, orders, or other distribution documents.
  • Arranges all finished product and incoming materials in the warehouse in an orderly

manner, according to warehouse location plan to allow for FIFO selection. Complies with the Bioterrorism Act of2002.

  • Examines incoming shipments, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and reports the damages and shortages to their supervisor.
  • Conducts inventory cycle counts as directed. Assists in taking periodic physical inventory.  Maintains 99% or above inventory accuracy levels.
  • Distributes materials to departments as directed.

Non-inventory receiving

  • Responsible for notifying purchase requisitioner that received goods have arrived and are in location for pick up.
  • Stores received goods in storage rack utilizing locator system.
  • Contacts purchasing department on all related problems with received goods concerning shortages and damages.
  • Works with all departments, carriers, and vendors to resolve problem areas, when they arise.

Sample area

  • Stores selected samples in sample area, pending requests for samples from sales representatives and customers.
  • Maintains perpetual inventory of samples and replenishes sample stock to maintain required labels.      
  • Collects, wraps, and packs samples, upon request, for shipment.
  • Physically ships all small package shipments with all necessary special labeling requirements.      
  • Completes small package paperwork, as required, for UPS, Federal Express, etc. performing computer data entry for small packages,      where applicable.
  • Performs manual tasks of replenishing packing cartons and finished goods.

Product Safety and Quality

  • Follows Product Safety and Quality standards
  • Follows FDA GMPís in regards to food contact packaging as it pertains to the employee


  • Practices safe work habits and follows general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE)
  • Practices good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows FDA product safety standards, follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements
  • Ensures lockout procedures are followed any time the equipment is being cleaned or maintained

  1. Education and/or Experience - High school diploma, or general education degree (GED), or five (5) yearsí driving experience. Must possess a class A, CDL driverís license, with a clean driving record. Must be able to operate both manual and automatic forklifts safely, as well as stretch wrap      machines, and other distribution equipment. Must be able to do cycle counts and understand inventory control.
  2. Language Skills - Must be able to communicate fluent English, on a one-on-one basis or in group situations, understand instructions, and follow SOPís (Standard Operating Procedures).
  3. Mathematical Skills - Ability to add,      subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole      numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  4. Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal      with problems involving a few basic situations.

5.     Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Connecticut Drivers License, Class A CDL License (renewable every four years), and updated medical card. Current, approved forklift license.

  1. Computer Skills - Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, E-mail, small package shipping systems, and ability to comprehend company systems.
  2. Bar Code Skills - Must have a working knowledge of bar code systems and applications in a distribution environment, utilizing shipping and receiving functionality. Must also have a working knowledge of bar code labeling and scanning options.

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and talk or hear.
  2. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance.
  3. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision      abilities required by this job include distance vision.
  4. Routinely required lifting is up to 50 lbs and range  varies from floor height to 6 feet high. This activity is combined with bending, twisting and high far reaching. Frequency of these activities is very high.
  5. Added requirements are ability to work under pressure timing tasks to keep up with other employees.
  6. Occasionally employee is required to move pallets (20- 50 lbs) and stack them up ten high (maximum height 3 feet) unassisted.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision (color coded regrind labels), peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
