RD&E Grinder-Utility

Department: Research, Development & Engineering
Location: Milford, CT

Responsible for supporting R&D development and production thermoforming machines as needed: collects and grinds all the scrap plastic for recycling, assist or fill in for packers, and others as needed.




  • Must be able to safely remove rewind from the thermoforming machines and place them in the proper bins.
  • Prepares sufficient supply of clean gaylords with bags inserted
  • Correctly segregates and identifies different materials such as OPS, PET or other plastics
  • Feeds grinder so as to prevent jams or other malfunctions due to improper handling
  • Able to clean any and all grinders and knows the proper operation and cleaning of the Torit dust collectors. Understands lockout/tag-out      procedures.
  • Properly cover, shrink-wrap and label filled gaylords after shredding.
  • Moves gaylords to the proper area for pick-up by Warehouse Operator.


  • Assembles and stacks the proper number of cartons for machines unable to use case tapers to meet production needs. Labels cartons correctly.
  • Ensures date code printer is printing the correct information on the cases, the print is in the correct location on the case, and is legible, if date code printer is not available he/she must stamp date codes on each case in the correct location and ensure the print is legible prior to stacking on pallet.
  • Properly stacks full cartons on pallet to specified heights.
  • Checks all cases on the skid have the same label & product.
  • Moves full skids out of the packing area and pallet wraps product.
  • Replaces empty pallets as needed.  Supplies correct size pallet for product specification.
  • Moves corrugated material to area for assembly in a timely manner. Loads waiting trailers.
  • Properly operates pallet stretch wrap machine.


  • Fills out assigned paperwork (i.e. carton count log, transfer trailer loading log and cross dock training log, etc.)
  • Accurately and consistently performs administrative tasks such as properly weighing, tagging and recording of information.


  • Repacks defective or damaged product.
  • Assists in relieving for breaks as directed.
  • Practices good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows auditing standards as it pertains to employee
  • Practices safe work habits and follow general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE). Safely operates the grinder and related equipment.
  • May be forklift certified
  • If he/she loads the last pallet that fills out the trailer he/she must lift dock leveler and secure in the closed position (closed position is flap down and level with the floor) and close dock door.
  • Maintains a good attendance record
  • Generally willing to work overtime

  • Follows Product Safety and Quality standards
  • Follows FDA GMP’s in regards to food contact packaging as it pertains to the employee


  • Practices safe work habits and follows general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE)
  • Practices good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows FDA product safety standards, follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements
  • Ensures lockout procedures are followed any time the equipment is being cleaned or maintained

Education and/or  Experience -Previous experience in a manufacturing environment is helpful.

Language - In work-related situations, must be able to take direction and communicate in English as well as read and understand written documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Math - Must be able to count and perform simple addition and subtraction.

Reasoning - Must able to apply commonsense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions.  Must pay attention to detail.

  1. In an 8-hour shift while performing this job, the employee may sit, stand or walk.
  2. Physical activities include lifting, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending and twisting as well as carrying items up to 50 lbs. approximately 15 feet.
  3. Pallet stacking of boxes 25-50 lbs. is performed rarely. 
  4. Floor lifts of 25-50 lbs. are performed frequently. High floor lifts up to 25 lbs are performed frequently; high floor lifts 25-50 lbs performed occasionally.
  5. 700-1300 lbs. pallets are occasionally pulled (12-13 pallets/day) approximately 40' with a pallet jack.
  6. Using tow motor or pallet jack, moves plastic rolls (approximately up to 1100 lbs) positioning them to be loaded onto machines.
  7. Moving and positioning roll shafts up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  8. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  9. The employee is occasionally required to perform various activities which require fine motor skills.
  10. This job occasionally requires gross manual dexterity to perform tasks including assembling boxes and placing plastic liners in them.
  11. Added requirements are ability to work under pressure, timing tasks to keep up with operational needs. 
  12. While performing this job, the employee may stand or walk around.
  13. Kneeling on floor and pulling roll of rewind from machine.
  14. This job occasionally requires changing molds and heaters where items weighing 150-200 lbs. are pulled from a shelf onto a "Big Joe" lift truck.  Two people are used for this operation.
