Distribution Operator

Department: Distribution Center
Location: McDonough, GA

Summary

Completes various functions of distribution activities to complete supply chain requirements of the company and its customers.

 

Essential Function/Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pulls or pick orders and examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications, checking for correctness and accuracy of count (Perfect Order.)
  • Operates forklift to load and unload trucks, move, convey, transport, or locate product within the facility, using electronic equipment, scanning bar coded product and locations.
  • Operates various bar code-oriented equipment to complete assigned tasks within the facility.
  • Uses computer to generate various paperwork required in the movement of finished goods and raw materials to supply both manufacturing operations and the customer.
  • Performs various computer-related functions utilizing company TMM system and Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail.
  • Using hand-held and tethered data collection devices,  compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bill of lading, orders, or other distribution documents.
  • Arranges all finished product and incoming materials in the warehouse in an orderly
  • manner, according to warehouse location plan to allow for FIFO selection (within 30 days.)
  • Examines incoming shipments, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and reports the
  • damages and shortages to their supervisor.
  • Conducts inventory cycle counts as directed. Assists in taking periodic physical inventory.
  • Distributes materials to departments as directed.
  • Clean and perform routine maintenance of forklifts daily, according to checklist.
  • Cleans, sweeps, and maintains the warehouse and loading dock area.
  • Assist in other warehouse department areas when needed.
  • Performs other work as assigned.
  • Willingness to be cross trained for other duties when necessary.
  • Reports and repacks according to SOPís any damage which occurs, including damage to the finished product, to the supervisor.
  • Responsible for working scheduled hours to include Saturday and / or Sunday to support the shuttle of product / material  between the DC and Production at Canal St (24/7.)
  • Follow company safety procedures for assigned duties.
  • Skilled certifications in forklift, tilt table, battery exchange, and stretch wrap.

  

Non-inventory receiving

  • Responsible for notifying purchase requisitioner that received goods have arrived
  • and are in location for pick up.
  • Stores received goods in storage rack utilizing locator system.
  • Contacts purchasing department on all related  problems with received goods concerning shortages and damages.
  • Works with all departments, carriers, and vendors to resolve problem areas, when they arise.

  

Sample area

  • Stores selected samples in sample area, pending requests for samples from sales representatives and customers.
  • Maintains perpetual inventory of samples and replenishes sample stock to maintain required labels.      
  • Collects, wraps, and packs samples, upon request, for shipment.
  • Physically ships all small package shipments with all necessary special labeling requirements.      
  • Completes small package paperwork, as required, for UPS, Federal Express, etc. performing computer data entry for small packages, where applicable.
  • Performs manual tasks of replenishing packing cartons and finished goods.
  • Interfaces with Customer Service and Marketing.

 

Product Safety and Quality

  • Follows Product Safety and Quality standards
  • Follows FDA GMPís in regards to food contact packaging as it pertains to the employee

 

Safety

  • Practices safe work habits and follows general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE)
  • Practices good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows FDA product safety standards, follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements
  • Ensures lockout procedures are followed any time the equipment is being cleaned or maintained

    1. Education and/or Experience - High school  education or GED; and three years related experience or training; or  equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to operate both manual and automatic forklifts safely, as well as stretch wrap machines, and other distribution equipment. Must be able to do cycle counts       and understand inventory control.
    2. Language Skills - Must be able to  communicate fluent English, on a one-on-one basis or in group situations,  understand instructions, and follow SOP's (Standard Operating       Procedures).
    3. Mathematical Skills - Ability to add,  subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole  numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
    4. Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or  oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few basic  situations.
    5. Certificates & Licenses - Current,  approved forklift license
    6. Computer Skills - Must have a working  knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, E-mail, small package shipping systems, and ability to comprehend company systems.
    7. Bar Code Skills - Must have a working knowledge of bar code systems and applications in a distribution environment, utilizing shipping and receiving functionality. Must also have a working knowledge of bar code labeling and scanning options.

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee  may stand or walk around and sit only if operating the forklift.
  2. Physical activities include lifting, reaching, bending and twisting as well as carrying items up to 50 lbs. approximately 45 feet.
  3. Routinely required lifting is up to 50 lbs and range varies from floor height to 6 feet high. This activity is combined with bending, twisting and high far reaching. Frequency of these activities is very high.
  4. Occasionally employee is required to move pallets (20 - 50 lbs) and stack them up ten high (maximum height 3 feet) unassisted.
  5. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision (color coded regrind      labels), peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
  2. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  3. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  4. Exposed to Forklift (dock to truck loading) engine noise.
  5. Must pay close attention to personal hygiene.
  6. Normal care is required in operating equipment or performing duties to prevent injury to others. An accident, should it occur, may result in lost time injuries such as sever fractures, lost of fingers or toes, eye injuries or health hazards not incapacitating in nature.
